A native of Joliette, Denis Coderre has devoted 40 years of his life to politics, always with the same objective: to listen to people, help them improve their quality of life, and realize their projects.
Elected Member of Parliament (LPC) for Bourassa in 1997, he was Secretary of State for Amateur Sport, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Minister responsible for La Francophonie, President of the Privy Council, and Quebec Lieutenant.
In June 2013, Denis Coderre left his position as a member of the House of Commons and Quebec lieutenant to run for mayor of Montreal. The city was then reeling under corruption scandals. Denis won the November 2013 election and became mayor of Montreal.
He is credited with an in-depth overhaul of the city’s public finances, pension plans and budgetary rigor, hailed by citizens and the business community alike. Under his leadership, the Quebec government granted Montreal metropolis status, giving it greater autonomy in key areas such as economic development, housing, heritage and integration of newcomers.
As mayor, Denis Coderre put Montreal, and by extension Quebec, back at the forefront of the international scene. He has contributed to reconciliation with Aboriginal peoples through strong gestures, and in 2017, the leaders awarded him the Bâton de parole, making him a credible interlocutor with Aboriginal peoples.
Denis has served on the Board of Directors of Eurostar, as a special advisor to the Fédération internationale automobile and as an ambassador for the Jewish General Hospital of Montreal.
Recently engaged to Annie Paré, Denis has two children and two grandchildren. He holds an MBA from the University of Ottawa and a bachelor’s degree in political science, majoring in public administration, from UdeM.
